Problem(Abstract)
In V6.1 and earlier releases of WebSphere Application Server, the WebSphere-embedded Connect JDBC driver for Microsoft SQL Server databases is included with the product. The version of the JDBC driver is upgraded by various Fix Packs for WebSphere Application Server V6.1. This document contains a list of the versions of the Connect JDBC driver that are included with each Fix Pack.Resolving the problem
The
WebSphere-embedded Connect JDBC driver is developed by Progress
Software (formerly DataDirect Technologies). The JDBC driver was
licensed by IBM and embedded with WebSphere Application Server V6.1 and
earlier releases to provide users with a standard JDBC driver that has
been tested and certified with WebSphere Application Server to connect
to Microsoft SQL Server databases. Subsequently, Microsoft released its
own JDBC driver for SQL Server. The Microsoft JDBC driver is
supported, and has been tested and certified, with WebSphere Application
Server V6.1. In V7.0 and later releases, it is the only JDBC driver
that is tested and certified with WebSphere Application Server to
connect to SQL Server databases. The WebSphere-embedded Connect JDBC
driver is not included with V7.0 and later releases.
IBM recommends that users of V6.1 migrate from the WebSphere-embedded Connect JDBC driver to the Microsoft JDBC driver.
The version of the WebSphere-embedded Connect JDBC driver has been upgraded by several Fix Packs for WebSphere Application Server V6.1. This has been done in order to fix defects and to upgrade the JDBC driver to new versions when the previous version has gone out of support by Progress Software. The following table shows the version of the Connect JDBC driver that is included in each V6.1 Fix Pack.
Users should be aware of potential behavior changes in the Connect JDBC driver that may occur when upgrading to a later WebSphere Application Server Fix Pack. For example, see APAR PK64012.
In addition, starting in V4.2 of the Connect JDBC driver, included in WebSphere Application Server V6.1.0.41 and above, there is only one Connect JDBC driver JAR file (sqlserver.jar) whereas in earlier Fix Pack levels, there were four Connect JDBC driver JAR fiels (base.jar, spy.jar, sqlserver.jar, and util.jar). These JAR files are located in the WAS_home/lib directory.
V4.2 is the latest version of the Connect JDBC driver to be included with WebSphere Application Server V6.1. Users must install Fix Pack 41 or later in order to upgrade to V4.2 of the driver. When using older versions of the driver, it may become necessary to upgrade to V4.2 if new defects are discovered because the older versions have reached the end of their support lifecycle from Progress Software.
